When we think of dragons, we usually picture menacing reptilian creatures with scaled bodies and large wings. But not all cultures depicted their dragons as we do here in the UK. Some were kind, protective spirits who were covered in feathers. Others are the work of the modern imagination, appearing in fictional works from the 21st century. Here, we explore five dragons that sport feathers.
Quetzalcoatl
Quetzalcoatl is one of the mythical beasts of Aztec mythology. With a name meaning ‘feathered serpent’, he was often depicted with a ruff of feathers similar to a lion’s mane. He was revered by the Aztecs - a people of Central America - as a deity associated with wind, knowledge, learning and arts and crafts, but was also a symbol of death and resurrection. A mostly kind deity, he could sometimes be fierce, displaying his wrath with powerful storms.
Yinglong
In Chinese mythology, Yinglong is a dragon with feathered wings who is said to control the rain. He is one of the oldest dragons, appearing in texts from as far back as the fourth century BCE. Able to cause both flooding and drought, he was central to rural farming communities in China who depended on agriculture for survival. Throughout history, clay figures have been made of him to summon rain and help crops grow.
Feathers
Feathers is the name of a Featherhide dragon in the animated TV series Dragons: The Nine Realms. A part of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, it features a unique cast of dragon characters, among whom is Feathers. She has a crown of feathers on her round head, as well as long feathers on the end of her tail, and is a playful, affectionate beast with the ability to perfectly blend into her surroundings.
Amphiptere
Historically, noble families would have symbols that identified them to others and communicated their wealth and status. In France, a dragon called an amphiptere was a symbol sometimes used on these so-called ‘coats of arms’. This beast had light coloured feathers and a snake-like body, with feathery wings and a long tail. The dragon shows that the family is fearsome in battle.
Dragonlord Ojutai
In the popular Magic: The Gathering card game, Dragonlord Ojutai appears in the Dragons of Tarkir set. This powerful beast has enormous feathered wings and, unlike many dragons in European culture, breathes ice instead of fire. In the game, it cannot be targeted by spells from the other players.
