When your child loses their first tooth it’s a big milestone, often coinciding with their first steps into greater independence. It’s an exciting time for them too - it means their first visit from the tooth fairy! As mythical beasts and magical creatures go, the tooth fairy is one of the most popular among children because she brings treats.
If you’re new to tooth fairying there are some simple rules to keep in mind if you want to make the experience as magical as possible.
1. Plan ahead
Some children are wobbling their tooth for weeks - or even months - before it finally falls out. For others the tooth comes out relatively quickly. Either way, it’s best to be prepared for that special moment. Plan what you want to tell your child about the tooth fairy - and bear in mind they may have chatted to other kids in school and formed their own expectations.
You’ll also want to decide in advance what treat you want to give your child and ensure you have it ready to exchange for the tooth. Many parents give coins, and in an age of credit cards and digital payments it now takes some forethought to have these available for the moment when the tooth falls out.
2. Think about the process
Traditionally children put their teeth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but a tiny tooth can be tricky to find in the dark and you don’t want to risk it getting lost - or risk waking up your child! Instead, prepare something that your child can leave by the side of their bed. Tooth fairy pillows with little pockets for teeth are available online, or you can make something special together for the purpose.
3. Be ready to answer questions
Children are nothing if not curious, so be ready to answer their burning questions about the tooth fairy. Is there only one or are there lots? How will she know the tooth is there waiting for her? Does she still come if the lost tooth accidentally gets lost or swallowed? You’ll need to be prepared with reassuring answers.
4. Remember to make the exchange
Parents are super busy with lots of things to remember, and often they take the opportunity to switch off once the kids are asleep. But this can mean forgetting to actually exchange the tooth for the treat. Set a reminder on your phone to make the swap so you don’t end up with a disappointed child in the morning. And if you do forget? That naughty tooth fairy! She must be on holiday…
